REMBAT
is an action comedy sports Malaysia that has been released in 2015 directed by
Shamyl Othman. This film has been starred by Ah Niu, Shahiezy Sam, Zizan Razak,
Sherry Alhadad, Zulin Aziz, Arja Lee, Michael Chin and Ramasundran. The film
chronicles the journey of Ah Niu (Chin Chye) who initially had a debt problem
with Ah Long while Shahiezy Sam (Malik) is trying to raise money for medical
expenses for her beloved grandmother's surgery. There was a scene where Chin
Chye suddenly changed the Chelsea and Arsenal football broadcasts to the
Malaysian football match against Vietnam. At that time Chin Chye sat beside
Malik and both of them enjoyed themselves watching the match until the Chelsea
and Arsenal fans comes and tell them to switch back to the international
football match. Both of them refused to change and insisted to watch the Malaysian
Football team match. The situation worsened when the quarrel broke out and
caused them to lock up. In the jailed they introduced themselves and they know
each other accidentally. They study at the same school and Malik was a football
player. They were released from the jailed by that night because the jailed was
full of dangdut dancers. On their way to home Chin Chye was captured by
Ahlong while Malik was on the call with his love. Malik came to help but by
that time both of them has been caught and tied up at the goal post. There,
they make some agreement between Malik, Chin Chye and AhLong. They are betting
that Malik will bring Ah Long to Malaysian strikers at that time who was Safee
Sali and betting that Malaysia will lose in the match against Thailand. However,
there are many obstacles which have severed the relationship of these two
friends such as, Malik lovers grandmothers was sick and had to undergo urgent
surgery which will cost RM40,000, the football match which is supposed to be in
Shah Alam Stadium was changed to Kuantan Stadium. But when they had arrived at
Kuantan the stadium was demolished, and the match will be live at Johor Bahru. They
got no money to go and decided to borrowed money with another money agencies
and out of the blue they were caught and placed in a cage because they are
betting that Malaysia will lose in the match while the agencies boss was a Malaysia football fans. At the end they
manage to go to Stadium Johor Bahru for the football match and there was the
place where Malik purpose his lover to get married and both of them and their
debt was depleted.
This film
had given some impact to the society with the cultural and ethnicity to
Malaysian. Shamyl Othman is a director which raises racial issues and understanding
among the multicultural community in Malaysia. He has a thousand and one
message when making the decision to use different races in the film REMBAT.
Shamyl Othman is a popular director and film producer that is the son of popular
director which is Othman Hafsham. REMBAT was released on 8 October 2015.These
film had used 70 percent of Malay
language and 30 percent of Mandarin language that can be easily understand by
the audiences in Malaysia also Indonesia and Chinese since they had used
mandarin languages when it comes to Chin Chye scene with AhLong. The variation of
the languages that has been used in the film indirectly attracted people to
watch the film. The used of the common language in the film show the culture
and ethnicity in Malaysia. However, in this movie also include the
understanding of culture and ethnicity in Malaysia when there has a scene when
Malik and Chin Chye went to a stall for breakfast and the owner of the stall
was an Indian man. While, this scene also shows that when Malik who is Malays
man ordered Nasi Goreng Cina while Chin Chye ordered Nasi Goreng
Kampung and suddenly the owner ask them to try Nasi Goreng India and
both of them agreed to try the nasi goreng. It shows that there is no racist
issue when people are trying to be opened minded with others.
Narrative
analysis of this film is about the culture and ethnicity in Malaysia has been
well presented when they showed how the different race come friend and solve
various problems together. They support each other without being racist. The film
also showed the danger of borrowing culture that usually happened among
Malaysians regardless of races in Malaysia. Narrative analysis is an importance
assumption in any film because human beings construct their understanding of
themselves and their lives, their immediate environments, and even worlds
outside their direct experience using stories which by watching movies, film
drama or by storytelling. In this film, where they have used the language which
are common with the audiences so their vocabulary for narrative analysis suits
the situation, the scene and also the character in the film. The actors had shown
their best performance with the spectacle of bodily performance within some environments
suits perfectly in the scenes; in the scene where there is an accident happened
while they are on their way to Kuantan at night, after they go back to the car
there is a Japan ghost in the car and their shock. This scene shows the body
performances that suit with the environment. The storyline of this movie was noticeably
clear until the end off the film.
Next is
semiotic criticism, the core of TV criticism is the creation of a text out of a
larger / thicker collection of incidents perception of them. This will become
the main attention and proof sources for the critical arguments. There is
always a TEXT composition written with beginning, middle, and an end. The
word texere from Latin words mean “to weave” used to give the
understanding or hints to the audiences. The text must be stable or instable. In
this film they have been used REMBAT as the text which give the instability of
the text. It is because the words signifier did not exist objectively, or the
meanings of a signifier vary from time to time. With what have I understand by
the text REMBAT this film must be the film that shows the fight between the
gangs in a power struggle but after I watched the film I have understood that
the text REMBAT that has been used the meaning of how they manage to easily
overcome various obstacles to achieved their goals. While in semiotic criticism
also shows the signifier which the sound the image and how they are
representing the sign with language. The poster of this film shows the flying
moneys and the AhLong and the stars of this film means they must have problem
with money and AhLong, while the other Poster shows that Malik and Chin Chye
was tied at the goal post shows that the film must be related to football games.
Ideological
criticism is works towards naturalizing the significances of Social System that
would serve the interests of dominant; working to create popular meaning out of
conventional culture. In this case, TV might be one of the sources of ideology
to the people. So, this film this film proves the harmony of the ethnic
diversity in Malaysia and the cultural diversity in Malaysia. The scene, where
there is Malay culture which are the tradition when the guys want to marry a girl,
they need to send the “rombongan meminang” to the girl’s family for the engagement.
While, there is also the culture of buying number of accident car which has
been commonly used by the Chinese. In the scene where there is an accident, a car
was overturned and the taxi driver tell that the plat number must be very lucky
and Chin Chye was agree with him and told that the number must be overturned
also and suddenly Malik speak up that Muslim cannot do that culture because it
is haram in Islam. This movie recently, shows the culture helps one another regardless
of race and religion. One of the scene where, when Malik went to the masjid to
pray Chin Chye was worried that he will not allowed to go in even when he
entered the mosque he was greeted by a Bilal at the mosque and are served with
a variety of foods. This film also give ideology that whenever it comes to love
there must be no excused achieved their goal to get married and success in
future. So, for the ideological criticism for this film that they have used the
perfect media institutions, and discursive practices that promote or sustain
forms of oppression and domination of culture and ethnicity.
Hence,
despite the success of producing a movie there is a hard works backstage crews
which are the script writer, cameraman, the editor who are also the main of the
existence of the film. Cameraman and multimedia teams should be complimented on
their excellent editing and shooting at all angles, especially in the stadium
where they need to find the angles where did Malik would appeared in the midst
of thousands of people. There is also a scene that is in the car. Where the car
that they were riding suddenly was shot by the Ah Long workers. There is the
shot where the cameraman gets the 360 motion when the car turn around and fin
the low angle to show the car tires and the close up shot to get the shock
reactions. Some zoom motion was taken in the Stadium where when Malik went out to
find his loves also have the dolly motion to show that the crowd was happy with
their loves story. Basically, local audience would like to prefer comedy film
so this film has success in provided the comedy instead they also put the culture
and ethnicity as the content of the film that can be related with the local
audiences. The great performances by the actors shows that the actors may bring
the character perfectly even though not all of the actors were the famous
actors.
This local
film prove that they have their own qualities in their content even they used
the infamous actors. This film storyline was easy to get and clear shows that
the director, the crews, and the actors had succeeded in delivering the content
in this movie. The director, who are Shamyl Othman known as successful director
had another film related to culture and ethnicity in Malaysia. It is because he
wants to bring and foster a sense of unity in a harmonious society.
