GENRE ANALYSIS: BOYS OVER FLOWER VS SCHOOL 2017

Boys Over Flower was aired in 2009 which is a South Korean television drama. This drama is starring by Lee Min Ho as Gu Jun Pyo who is the leader of F4. F4 is most powerful groups at the prestigious Shinwa High School. There are for members in the F4 group and the other three is So Yi-Jung and Song Woo-Bin. They Gu Jun-Pyo rich friend’s where they have their own heirs. In this drama, the F4 groups have the big influence within the other student and the school until one day the F4 had bullied a student and the student want to suicide, accidentally a poor commoner Geum Jan Di starred by Ku Hye-sun save the student life. The incident has been recorded by another student and the incident was widespread and viral. The news has come the knowledge of head of Shinhwa Group Kang Hee-soo. Head of Shinwa Group had decided to offered Geum Jan-di to enter High School with swimming scholarship. On the first day Geum Jan-di entered the school, students already knew that she came from poor family. She has bullied on the first day and one of the F4 members Yoon Ji-hu helped her. On the next day, Geum Jan-di had a new friend Oh Min-ji. While they are eating ice cream Oh Min-ji accidentally falling and drop the ice cream on Gu Jun-pyo shoes. Gu Jun-pyo arrogantly ask Oh Min-ji to lick his shoes for forgiveness. Geum Jan-di taking steps forwards to defend her friend. F4 remembered Geum Jan-di and mocking her as SuperGirl. Jun-pyo decided to make Jan-di lick his shoes but Jan-di make a move to hit his faces with ice cream. Gu Jun-pyo was very surprised and mad that the girl was very brave to fight him. Starting from that Gu Jun-pyo started to revenge but Jan-di always ignore him. Then, Jun-pyo had falling in love with Jan-di while Jan-di falling in love with Yoon Ji-hu. Many things happened between Jan-di and Jun-pyo until they are together and Jun-pyo decided to leave Jan-di because of his responsibility for his family’s company. At last both of them being together happily.

            School 2017 is a serial drama from South Korea. This drama has been starred by Kim Jung-hyun, Kim Se-jeong, Jang Dong-yoon, Han Sun-hwa and Han Joo-wan. The story follows a class of high school students struggling to conquer the burden of being ranked by their test grades and facing the challenge of becoming an adolescent in a dysfunctional high-pressure system. The lead of protagonist is Ra Eun-ho (Kim Se-jeong), an optimistic and kind-hearted 18-year-old who dreams of becoming a webtoon artist but is trapped in the school's hunt for a mysterious troublemaker, known as 'Student X.' When she is accused to becoming a Student X, her dream of going to college to study art is put at risk when she is expelled. Song Dae-hwi (Jang Dong-yoon) is a brilliant student who is ranked 1st each time but lacks ample money for his dream college. At the end of the story most of them went to college. Kim Jung-hyun (Hyun Tae-won) Father Lee Jong-woon (Hyun Kang-woo resign as director at the school and be a teacher and live a normal life after his son has been caught as ‘X’.

            The television series between Boys Over Flower and School 2017 had a similar genre but have their own genre analysis. Both television series drama is about a high school student in romance, jealousy and teenager’s life. Both drama shows the journey of high school students to pursuit their ambition where in Boys Over Flower how Geum Jan-di try and practice harder in swimming and how Gu Jun-pyo being very matured in running his family business while in School 2017 shows the student struggle which is where Ra Eun Ho struggle to pursue her interest in webtoon and how help his family business which is selling the fried chicken. Basically, Boys Over Flower storyline are about F4 group which is the group members comes from a rich and influential family and how the poor commoner daughter life in the Shinghwa school and how Jan di survived while the F4 haunted her and love stories within Jun pyo and Jan di. School 2017 storyline is about Ra Eun-ho the girl who want to pursue study in university but she is a weak student in her studies and accidentally has trapped to cases where she suspected of making a mistake and almost expelled from school. The director son Hyun Tae Won who is the mysterious ‘X’ secretly likes Ra Eun-ho and they are being together at the last.

            In the term of semantic, both drama has the almost similar plot twist which, Boys Over Flower and the School 2017 is ambiguous status of the text. Both drama is about the struggle of high school student journey for their future. Boys Over Flower stand for four rich and influential boys help a poor and ambitious girl to achieve her ambition and to live with her lovely relationship between one of the F4 members who is Gu Jun-pyo. One of the scenes, where Jun-pyo decided to left Jan-di the others three members of F4 trying to help Jan-di to get into relationship with Jun-pyo again. In School 2017 is the ambiguous status of life of high school students, where there is high school student struggle to achieve their ambition. One of the scenes where Ra Eun-ho who are the last ranking in the school try to figure another method for her so, that she can pursue her studies in webtoon studies at university. The ambiguous text which is ‘x’ the sign which is the element of the ‘x’ who is the mystery character is strong where there are related which the signified. In both drama there have protagonist character who is Geum Jan-di in the Boys Over Flower. Jan-di in the scene where she has been bullied by her classmates and there is no one in the classroom help or being in her sides including her best friends. And there an antagonist character which is her best friend Oh Min-ji. Oh Min-ji seems to be Jan-di best and loyal friend at first but completely change after she knew that Gu Jun-pyo love Geum Jan-di and she betray their friendship and frame Jan-di has a scandal with other guys. While in School 2017 drama the protagonist character is Ra Eun-ho who comes from poor family. She has been suspected as an offender just because she is in the lowest ranking in the school. It is because she has been caught in the teacher’s room at night at has been suspected as a questions paper thief and the other student starting to mocking her. The protagonist character is Kim Hee Chan who is a son of a famous Judge. He's tutored by Dae-hwi but he's jealous of him, because he's still coming to him second. He used to date Seo Bo-ra when he was in grade 10 but ends up separating because he is paranoid and violent. He really wants to show who ‘X’ is.

            From the synthetic term, narrative oh both high school students almost same but there some differences of the plot. For example, Boys Over Flower is the cluster school for rich people school while School 2017 is the normal school for all students.

           In the nutshell, the ideological approaches which they have the same genres which is romance, jealousy and teenagers life. From have I watch, Korean drama usually have the romance and teenage because it is suitable for every ages to watch  and the content can be related with people real life when the influential take power and the corruption will happened and the romance genre shows the struggle of chasing loves will attract people to watch until the end of the drama.
